I spend no less than 10 hours a week looking at property in Driggs and the surrounding areas debating if I should just say “fuck it”, sell everything I own here in Utah, and … um, leave Utah for pow?? Haha, who leaves Utah for pow? For Targhee, one moves out of Utah. Here’s a little early season stoke for y’all who dream of the Tetons on a daily basis. I started off the season with a badly sprained ankle and hadn’t been able to do much for the previous three months. Despite this I was able to ski opening day up at Alta, which had some pretty good snow. Thankfully my PT cleared me to ski the next day. I was only able to ski 2 or 3 more times before I headed back home to Michigan for Christmas. Leaving Michigan, some friends and I headed out to Jackson Hole for new years. We made the 24 hour drive and got in at 5 am on December 30th. Then next day we hiked headwall for some good snow and fresh lines. New years in Jackson is always a riot, from loosing a few of our group on the way into town to being one of a probably 100 people trying to get a cab home that night, puking in a bar bathroom and rallying afterward, it was an overall memorable night. No skiing was done on January 1st, but we ended up playing hockey on the outdoor rink in Wilson for about 3 or 4 hours instead (me in my figure skates of course). We spent two more days in Jackson, hiked headwall again, some people skied Corbets, and we got fresh snow each night making the days of skiing amazing. I then heard of a storm hitting Salt Lake and the Cottonwoods over the next few days. So we packed up and headed down to Utah to follow the storm. We skied two days at Snowbird, were some of the 1st ten people let into mineral basin when patrol opened it up, and got to ski over 20 inches of fresh, untracked powder. We were also able to sneak into the hot tub at Snowbird after skiing which was a perk! I also decided to take a class this semester, called Snow Dynamics and Avalanches, that involves learning all about snow science, avalanches, and ski touring almost every Friday! Later on in January another storm hit the Wasatch and I got to ski a weekend with knee deep fresh snow, and was getting face shots on most turns (which I guess isn’t that hard as I am only a little over 5 feet tall!). After a few weekend of skiing Alta, I headed back to Jackson Hole to ski with my family over Prez weekend. I ended up getting in around 11pm, because of my snow and avy class earlier that day and it was snowing all night up in Jackson! We skied almost all day Saturday, with runs through the Alta Chutes, Bivouac woods, Central Chutes, and of course Rendezvous Bowl. We went slightly easier Saturday, as my mom, brother, and I were being taken backcountry Sunday! Sunday morning, we got to the tram line around 8:45am and there was already a 2-3 tram wait. Once we finally made it up the tram, we went through the first avalanche control gate, and down into cardiac drainage. The first run was almost too good to be true! And the next few runs were just as incredible! Fresh lines, getting a workout skinning back up, then fresh lines again. There was good, about boot to knee depth powder, and snow of the best snow I have ever skied! We ended the day skiing down and out through Rock Springs and getting a couple pitchers of beer at Nick Wilson’s (not a bad way to end the day!). Despite being sore and tired, we got up and skied the next day. The snow, even inbounds, was great. Alta 1 was great, Rendezvous bowl was great, all runs that day were amazing! I also accomplished a life goal of mine: ski over 1 million vertical feet at Jackson. And I achieved my goal in this trip over Prez day! I finally hit a million vertical feet, actually over a million, as I now have 1,335,721 vertical feet at Jackson! This now brings us to spring break, and it was very much spring skiing! I skied most of the days, and it was 50 degrees out, sunny, and the snow was mashed potatoes! I skied Alf’s High Rustler for the first time in a while and I hit a new personal speed record: 75.3mph. I also skied in my Red Wings jersey a few of the days because it was so nice out! This was also week 10 at Snowbird, where my uncle knows a lot of old time Snowbird skiers. I got to meet some really awesome skiers and people in general and had some pretty awesome home cooked meals. One even got me to try and like a lot of different white wines, even one from Austria! Our last field day for Snow Dynamics and Avalanches was this past Friday. We went on a ski tour up Big Cottonwood Canyon, my first time skiing backcountry in BCC. We worked on route planning and how to safely travel in avalanche terrain. It also helps that we got to ski some pretty awesome snow on the way back down!

Despite losing his way during his 20s, Dave Rosen never lost his love for skiing. Sober and motivated, Dave is determined to make up for lost time. Dave reached out to me a couple years ago, and we agreed to meet at Powder Mountain, Utah one day to see if we had the chemistry to make a good working team. I was blown away by Dave’s abilities as a skier, especially his eagerness to hit big jumps off piste, but even more so I was impressed by his professionalism and desire for perfection. That first day of skiing together went so well that we’re been working together regularly to create photo and video media. Over time Dave told me how his addiction to alcohol had taken over his life, but how he’d been sober for several years after finding his way through Alcoholics Anonymous. I thought he had a story worth sharing, but I didn’t want to simply shoot a “talking head” documentary. I approached him with the idea of this video with a voiceover, no obvious interview, and the video stylistically being divided into two parts. Dave Rosen at Powder Mountain Dave embraced the concept and over several days we were able to get a lot of great shots in the park and off piste at Powder Mountain. I don’t normally shoot in the park, so it was a fun challenge doing multiple laps shooting various angles in slow motion and with the camera stabilizer in an effort to best show Dave doing his thing. We’re looking forward to this season, and we already have plans to shoot throughout Northern Utah. Chris enjoying Park City Main Street during the summer. A few hours into a twenty-something hour drive to Canada we roll into a sketchy gas station in the middle of nowhere. The team swarms the convenience store for snacks. Although traveling together in a small, cramped space can be grueling, it builds friendships and connections like I’ve never experienced. Up on the mountain the camaraderie is even stronger. The team pre-inspects the venue together,, sharing thoughts and ideas on various line choices and encouraging each other with positive vibes. Every athlete is nervous and scared standing in the start of a comp run, but having coaches and teammates by your side is calming and reassuring. Whether you stomp your run or crash, there’s always someone at the bottom giving out high-fives and hugs. The freeride community is small, the stoke runs deep and everyone is friendly and supportive. Having a team surrounding you makes it that much better. Shared meals, victories, defeats and injuries, we’re in it together, cheering each other on with plenty of laughs, high-fives and hugs. Overall I had a super successful and more importantly fun season! Thanks to everyone who was a part of it!

Mutts are even better. We adopted Lucy, our cattle dog mix, after finding her wandering the foothills above our house where she had been heartlessly abandoned in the middle of winter. She was surviving on mice and voles she caught by pouncing through the snow like a fox, so it took several months before she realized the bowls of dog food we fed her weren’t a passing phase. She still terrorizes rodents of all sorts, but now simply for the sport of it. Six years later, she’s a solid member of our pack, and we can’t imagine our lives without her. She may have given up living off of rodents, but she still enjoys chasing anything with four legs — the bigger the better it seems. She’s seen more of the Western U.S. than most people. She’s been there as my daughters have grown up from young girls to young women. She’s chased us down untracked powder. She’s explored the depths of mountain ranges. She has curled up next to me under a tarp in the rain. She’s an “adventure dog” through and through, and she embodies the “explore more” attitude with her limitless energy. As a good friend once said, “everything’s better when you do it with a dog” and that is the truth! Here’s to all the great mutts out there who spend their days living the lives others dream of. In my next life I can only hope I come back as a heeler mutt living along the Wasatch Range. Here’s to all the great mutts out there who spend their days living the lives others dream of. In my next life I can only hope I come back as a heeler mutt living along the Wasatch Range. It’s a pretty great life.

The next week, we met again in SLC and over the course of one day we were able to shoot video of Caroline running in the foothills, working out at the gym, and hiking at Snowbird Resort. It was a long, fun day, and I knew I captured a lot of great shots. We said goodbye and wished each other all the best during the upcoming ski season. I threw together a quick assembly edit to make sure I had all the shots I needed, then I moved on to other gigs and didn’t think much about our unfinished project. Between Caroline’s world travels and my own “schedule restrictions” (aka – other obligations that required skiing), we couldn’t choose a day to meet until April. Unfortunately, the weak snow year was also deciding to give up the ghost and leave us even earlier than usual. As we talked about our plans, the prospect of running out of snow was very real. Luckily, two late season storms hit and gave us the saving grace of a new layer of snow. Then, almost immediately after it fell, this white goodness started to melt, too. As we drove up the Little Cottonwood Canyon I noticed the buds on the maple trees opening up. The canyon was a sea of glowing green. Beautiful, but not what I needed to capture some “on snow” shots. I was worried we’d waited too late in the season. One mile down the canyon from Snowbird the snow coverage was still sketchy and I was still worried. A couple more miles up the canyon and we parked at the base of Mt Superior. Caroline pointed at the approach and the chute she wanted to ski. It looked great! The cruel sun didn’t have a clear shot, with it so nicely nestled at a bit over 8,000 ft we found our perfect location. It was a short morning skin and boot pack followed by a short ski back down. The video came together rather quickly at that point. It attempts to showcase not only the work that goes into training for Caroline’s physically demanding adventures into the mountains, but her thoughts about why she is always in pursuit of Type 2+ fun. Enjoy!

I’m in a dream, one that I don’t want to wake up out of. The ‘flow’ of life has taken us to yet another mystical and snowy village, Kiroro. We have been fortunate enough to connect with Liam, Kiroro’s athlete manager who has guided us around the mountain, pointing out local stashes. Our accommodation is at the Grand Piano Hotel where there is a buffet and a karaoke bar, in which we have all taken turns busting out our best and worse hits. Kiroro is deep. I have been battling with smiling and not choking on infinite amounts of snow here. The pitches are steep enough to soar through the bottomless and are sprinkled with exotic Japanese trees. The trees are painted white and glow miraculously, even through white outs. After skiing our first day at Kiroro Resort, we indulged in a nice meal, several bottles of wine and met up with K2 female athletes and friends to have a wild karaoke bar night. Have you ever experienced an emotion that doesn’t quite fit into any vocabulary description or that you never knew existed? A feeling that transcends through your body, mind, and surroundings, connecting all three at once. A feeling that lifts your energy to a higher vibration, releases the ego and leaves only one thought to harbor… thank you. For many, this feeling has come with accomplishing a grueling hike, looking into a lover’s eyes, or catching endless waves surfing. For me, this feeling recently came into fruition with a hundred thousand snowflakes falling on my face as I looked at my ‘line’ illuminated by a pink sky. As we side stepped up a ridge at Kiroro, my heart beat increased and body shook with excitement. This feeling was ignited by the stunning views which were enhanced by every turn down a perfect face of untouched snow. Each turn was a mixture of laughs, gasps, and screams of ‘REALLY?!’. When I got to the bottom of the mountain and the daylight was fading, I had become addicted to this feeling. I was fully immersed in it’s peacefulness and I had to keep going. I knew when I looked at the rest of my crew, they were experiencing the same feeling. We returned to our rooms to get ready for a night tour on a slope located behind our hotel. This zone was perfectly lit by the village’s light pollution. We skinned up, with our headlamps turned off, no music, just listening to the quietness. It took us 90 minutes to get to the top, where the crew and I looked out over the untracked and just sat, stared, and exchanged looks that summed up our journey. Skiing down in the dark, barreling through trenches in lit up snow, with not a sound other then the swishing of your skis, was the peak of that feeling. When we got to the bottom, we clicked out of skis and boards, and hugged one another before belting out our cries of joy! The experience was so surreal that we woke up at 4:30 am to do it again. This time with the morning light shimmering onto the white pallet. After 14 hours of skiing in the same day, it was ready to pack up our gear and head to Sapporo for our return flight. On our way back we stopped in Otaru for a great meal and a stroll along the coast. I have never been in a coastal town with 6 foot snowbanks along the roads, it was a trip! When we arrived to Sapporo, our tired bodies were able to make one last push to local bars and last trips to 7/11s. In the morning, we were ready to travel back in time to the Wasatch where our friends and family would NOT want to hear about all the pow ;). Goodbye Japan, you have truly changed my mind, heart and way of life.

Headed out of Kutchan, on our way to Kiroro. Photo: Kade Krichko

WATCH: MYST Takes Japan

Kiroro is deep. I have been battling with smiling and not choking on infinite amounts of snow here. The pitches are steep enough to soar through the bottomless and are sprinkled with exotic Japanese trees. The trees are painted white and glow miraculously, even through white outs. After skiing our first day at Kiroro Resort, we indulged in a nice meal, several bottles of wine and met up with K2 female athletes and friends to have a wild karaoke bar night.

While all those East Coasters revel in deep snow and frigid temps, we’re all walking around in t-shirts and sandals out West. It’s a good old reminder to appreciate the deep days and perhaps a sobering sneak peak at winters to come if we don’t assault that beast, global warming. My good buddy Mike and I were musing about all the warm, springlike temps here in Utah and thinking about the triple-sport days we usually log in late April or May. While these usually consist of climbing-skiing-biking, or perhaps skiing-biking-running, we thought we could attempt something a bit more unusual. Why not add PADDLE to the triple-sport roster, mix it up a little. So we did. With an alpine start we managed to paddle and pedal out at Antelope Island before heading higher to Snowbird for a few runs. It wasn’t exactly ‘powdery’ up at Snowbird but the title ‘Paddle, Pedal, Slide Down Ice At Low Tide” just didn’t have the same ring to it. This is a quick peek at our TRIPLE DIP.

Hopping on the JP chairlift we separated ourselves from the crowd. We then rode the empty Mt Allen Tram that dropped us off at the top of the ski area (approx 9,300′ elevation). We were thrilled to see a few inches of untracked snow, sub-freezing temps, and an overcast sky to keeps the temps down — we threw on our skis, took off, and enjoyed the best snow conditions we’d seen in a week. We did six laps back down to the tram before we headed back to the base to grab the others. During one of the rides up the Tram, Dave commented how shocked he was that we’d only seen three other skiers, so it was like having the place to ourselves. ”Better lucky than good is what I always say.” The clouds kept moving up and over the mountain in waves, so visibility kept alternating from poor to spectacular. Early that afternoon we headed back up with Darrell Haggard, Skylar Memsic, and Emma Morgan (SKILOGIK athlete manager, SKILOGIK athlete, and SKILOGIK ambassador, respectively). We stuck to the upper elevations and took advantage of little stashes of goodness we could find. Dave during one of his standard launches. Dave Rosen throwing a Cork 7 off a natural wind lip above a two stage drop. Skylar sending it with the barren mountains as a backdrop. Emma charging hard and showing what great ski technique looks like. Dave enjoying the views after a great day of skiing. Now let’s pray for snow and some good ol’ Utah Powder! I had just moved from Hong Kong to England and even though I had been skiing for 14 years I didn’t know that ski DVD’s existed! The name of the movie was “The Tangerine Dream” and was the catalyst for my ski movie addiction and travelling the world in search of an adventure. Among the many mind boggling segments, the one that stood out to me the most was when Micah Black, Dash Longe and co visited Gulmarg, India. The place looked wild, the people looked friendly and on top of all that, the snow looked out of this world! And this February, 8 years later, my brother, a group of friends and myself were on a plane and heading to this dream destination. This video is a close a reflection to my trip as I could make. Gulmarg wasn’t having the best snow year, in fact the 10 days I was there were the first skiable days of the season so we got super lucky. Despite this, the trip was all time and you can read the full write-up of the trip here: robin-lee.squarespace.com/blog/gulmarg/17/2/2015 Hope you all enjoy!
